In 2008 it seems like things were changing in the Weight Pull Community shifting away from the All-Breed concept. As I sat back watching and listening to what people didn’t like and what was available to participate in. I started thinking; why can’t there be an Organization that is Fun, Friendly, Family oriented, yet Competitive. An Organization with Rankings where dogs can be rewarded for their Performance, and a Program that would promote the sport to Juniors. Remember, the Juniors are our future to this sport.

It took some time to come up with a Point System that was fair and equal to every dog and that took the politics out. We needed a Ranking System that allowed for more people to achieve some type of success and recognition and to motivate them to keep pulling and grow. There was no organization that sanctioned all 3 Surfaces, nor had a Juniors Program or Rankings by State, on each surface, in each weight class.

We wanted a “Pull Off” type system to advance to the end of the season competition; called the “Summits”. Like when you reach to top of the mountain, you’re at the Summits, and with a Pull Off you’re working your way to the top of the season. With the Organization being new, we didn’t have enough areas with pulls or to get the pull off system in place, but we had that Structure in place for the future.

I had told a few very close friends about my thoughts and was encouraged to do it. FINALLY here we are!

Now we need a LOGO. Karen Frenette offered to draw it up. I told her I would like to see a Northern Breed on the Snow, a Bully Breed and then a non-typical breed too. I sent her my Majic’s picture on Snow and she asked for other pictures and ideas. My thought was to show the other dogs on the other surfaces. The shape of the Logo was great, so different from from the usual round shapes. We would stand out from everyone else.

On Rails is Wulfie – Wulfie is a Miniature Poodle and is the 1st Poodle to reach “Super Dog” status. He had all his other titles but lacked weight pulling. This is what got his owner Harold into weight pulling. Lori was a great teacher. Wulfie had reached UGRCH 15 in AKC Agility and had been in their Top 50 for 8 years straight. He also achieved titles in Rally Obedience and was an Agility MACH.

On Wheels is Terra – Terra’s full name is UWPCH URO1 CA CH Gravity’s Digital Rain Matrix CGC TT WDS SDC1. She was an American Pit Bull Terrier bred by Matrix Kennels in Texas. Terra had pulled in IWPA, UKC, and APA. When not pulling she like Obedience, Run Agility, performed stupid pet tricks, chased cats, bury toys under blankets and dug them up again; she was a also a fiend for Flirt Pole and Lure Coursing. She had a Great ride.

On Snow is Majic – UWPCHSX Kodiak’s Black Majic, WD (S&W), WDX (S&W), WDS (S&W), WPI, WPII, WPIII. Majic started pulling and at first wouldn’t pull at all until he had timed out, and I would have to go get him. He would even completely turn his back to me, sit and look at the cart. Then one day the light bulb came on and he pulled a 1000# on snow! He was hooked after that. He was one of my two main lead dogs on my recreational sled team; running his first race at 13 months old. He won 4 Regional Gold Metals on Snow and 1 Bronze on Wheels, and earned over 800 total points in his career in the WIPA. In the UKC he was the first Northern Breed to earn all 6 titles and just the 2nd ever to get 100 point on Snow. He remains tied for the 10th highest career lifetime point for Snow. He finished #3 in 2004 and #7 in 2005 in their All-Star Program. He was the 1st dog in the UKC Weight Pull Program to earn 1000 career championship points. He also participated in the National Kennel Club Weight Pull Program and won the MWPP as earned his WPIII title. Quite a Career. He pulled 237+ in total, on all 3 Surfaces In Multiple Organizations, In 15 States, and 2 Countries. So many Titles and MWPP awards along the way.
